Fill Up Your Dance Card

If you are in and around the Chicago area over the next couple of weekends - have we got some crafty events for you!

First up is an event tonight - this one fills up quick, so call or email before going! It's the Chicago Craft Social, the idea being that you bring any unwanted craft supplies that are lurking around your home. Fabric, scrap booking paper, beads, buttons, whatever... if you don't want it anymore, we do! We'll sort the items on the swap table and you'll have the opportunity to "shop" throughout the evening. One crafter's junk is another's treasure, right? The leftover supplies will be donated. So cool - we love this event!

This Saturday, from 9 to 5, the first annual Holiday Market put on by the DIY (design it yourself, they do the work) 1154 Lill Studio Handbag boutique takes place. We are excited about this one as it features a couple of our favs and friends, Orange Beautiful and Cardiology. Can't wait to catch up with them - and buy a print or two!

To round out this crafty triple threat, there's the DIY Trunk Show, organized by the Chicago Craft Mafia. Free admission and a Chicago-centric group of great exhibitors is more than enough to get us there!

If that wasn't enough holiday pre-planning and socializing, be sure to check out the One of A Kind show and of course, the Renegade Holiday Fair (in Chicago & San Fran!).

L-O-V-E

We can't say enough good things about what Anna from Rifle Design does with paper - especially when some of it comes from us! So we were truly smitten when we came across this sweet invitation suite featuring our 100% pcw Jackpine 4bar rsvp envelopes. Because Anna is an illustrator as well as a graphic designer, she has an eye, a hand, and a knack for creating these one of a kind beauties which usually feature hand painted decorative portraits, maps and motifs to fit the events theme perfectly. Just fantastic!

Mega Brands Implement Paper Policies

What do these mega brands have in common?
Their paper footprints just got a little lighter...

The Rainforest Action Network recently announced a commitment from H&M, The Gucci Group, Tiffany & Co. and Staples to examine their paper supply chains and eliminate all "rainforest" paper products- paper produced from endangered forests. Their decision to stop purchasing paper from companies that are widely known for actively destroying forests in Indonesia and elsewhere is a major step. Worldwide, the destruction of tropical rainforests accounts for twenty percent of the worlds annual greenhouse emissions... with Indonesia alone, accounting for eight percent.

Last Tuesday, The Gucci Group announced it's decision to implement an aggressive environmental paper policy as part of an environmental action plan the company is enforcing to help curtail climate change. This decision is a huge stride in leading the fashion industry to purchase responsibly harvested and recycled paper. According to The Paper Planet - " With its new policy, the Gucci Group has pledged to reduce the amount of paper it uses, eliminate fiber from high conservation value forests, and only to purchase recycled products or those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council by December 2010. With this policy, they are ensuring that all paper categories used by the group, from copy paper to shopping bags, do not come from endangered forests like those in Indonesia."

Great news for fashionistas worldwide, and, it looks like that little blue box just got a little greener!

Blogs you Should Know

A couple of great blogs we visit pretty frequently for inspiration and information are The Dieline and Grain Edit. Already pretty well known in their own right, but we thought we'd give 'em a shout out so more people will know about their fabulosity. Enjoy and visit often!

The Dieline is dedicated to the progress of the package design industry and its practitioners, students and enthusiasts. According to the creators of the site, it's purpose is to define and promote the world’s best examples of packaging, and provide a place where the package design community can review, critique and stay informed of the latest industry trends and design projects being created in the field.

Grain Edit is focused on classic design work from the 1950s-1970s and contemporary designers that draw inspiration from that time period. Site content includes interviews, articles, designers libraries as well as examples of rare design annuals, type specimens, Ephemera, posters and vintage kids books from their own bookshelves.

This Is It!

If you haven't seen the documentary about Michael Jackson's final rehearsal days for "This Is It"- you must. The film delivers an incredible tour de force message on so many levels- inspiration, life, love, art, artistry, hard work, fate, faith, devotion, dedication, and the list just goes on and on. Even if you are not a Michael fan - SEE THIS FILM!

The dance sequences are so amazing and the editing so extraordinary that it captures a pulse in what begins to feel like 3D film. (You can watch some clips here).

From pyro-techniques to aerial lifts, rap and razzle dazzle beyond compare- you are probably wondering by this point- why on earth are we writing about it on a green blog!?

The "IT" in "This Is It" also has a multi level message. A bit surprising, (as the show is all about excess), a loud and clear message is: It is time to think about the earth- what it means, how precious it is and that the time to save IT is now. There are two extensive scenes devoted to the earth... music videos onto themselves. And, while both are more than a bit over the top (it is Michael after all)- the message is strong.

The entire film really does inspire- to strive to be a better artist /performer /person. What a gift!

Table or Loveseat?

On it's own - this is a great looking table. Designed as a collaboration between a Brooklyn artist and Eco Systems Furniture, it's offered in two different wood options: World Mix, made from reclaimed shipping palettes; or a post-consumer recycled Teak. If that isn't enough to move you - take a look at it's split personality...

Eureka, it's a loveseat! Yes that's the very same table shown above after being folded down to reveal an incredibly stylish seating option. We were floored when we came across this fabulous find on Tiny House Design, a great blog about redefining the space (and how much of it) that we live in. Perfect for urban dwellers, artists studios and design lovers alike!
