Mega Brands Implement Paper Policies

What do these mega brands have in common?
Their paper footprints just got a little lighter...

The Rainforest Action Network recently announced a commitment from H&M, The Gucci Group, Tiffany & Co. and Staples to examine their paper supply chains and eliminate all "rainforest" paper products- paper produced from endangered forests. Their decision to stop purchasing paper from companies that are widely known for actively destroying forests in Indonesia and elsewhere is a major step. Worldwide, the destruction of tropical rainforests accounts for twenty percent of the worlds annual greenhouse emissions... with Indonesia alone, accounting for eight percent.

Last Tuesday, The Gucci Group announced it's decision to implement an aggressive environmental paper policy as part of an environmental action plan the company is enforcing to help curtail climate change. This decision is a huge stride in leading the fashion industry to purchase responsibly harvested and recycled paper. According to The Paper Planet - " With its new policy, the Gucci Group has pledged to reduce the amount of paper it uses, eliminate fiber from high conservation value forests, and only to purchase recycled products or those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council by December 2010. With this policy, they are ensuring that all paper categories used by the group, from copy paper to shopping bags, do not come from endangered forests like those in Indonesia."

Great news for fashionistas worldwide, and, it looks like that little blue box just got a little greener!

Blogs you Should Know

A couple of great blogs we visit pretty frequently for inspiration and information are The Dieline and Grain Edit. Already pretty well known in their own right, but we thought we'd give 'em a shout out so more people will know about their fabulosity. Enjoy and visit often!

The Dieline is dedicated to the progress of the package design industry and its practitioners, students and enthusiasts. According to the creators of the site, it's purpose is to define and promote the world’s best examples of packaging, and provide a place where the package design community can review, critique and stay informed of the latest industry trends and design projects being created in the field.

Grain Edit is focused on classic design work from the 1950s-1970s and contemporary designers that draw inspiration from that time period. Site content includes interviews, articles, designers libraries as well as examples of rare design annuals, type specimens, Ephemera, posters and vintage kids books from their own bookshelves.

This Is It!

If you haven't seen the documentary about Michael Jackson's final rehearsal days for "This Is It"- you must. The film delivers an incredible tour de force message on so many levels- inspiration, life, love, art, artistry, hard work, fate, faith, devotion, dedication, and the list just goes on and on. Even if you are not a Michael fan - SEE THIS FILM!

The dance sequences are so amazing and the editing so extraordinary that it captures a pulse in what begins to feel like 3D film. (You can watch some clips here).

From pyro-techniques to aerial lifts, rap and razzle dazzle beyond compare- you are probably wondering by this point- why on earth are we writing about it on a green blog!?

The "IT" in "This Is It" also has a multi level message. A bit surprising, (as the show is all about excess), a loud and clear message is: It is time to think about the earth- what it means, how precious it is and that the time to save IT is now. There are two extensive scenes devoted to the earth... music videos onto themselves. And, while both are more than a bit over the top (it is Michael after all)- the message is strong.

The entire film really does inspire- to strive to be a better artist /performer /person. What a gift!

Table or Loveseat?

On it's own - this is a great looking table. Designed as a collaboration between a Brooklyn artist and Eco Systems Furniture, it's offered in two different wood options: World Mix, made from reclaimed shipping palettes; or a post-consumer recycled Teak. If that isn't enough to move you - take a look at it's split personality...

Eureka, it's a loveseat! Yes that's the very same table shown above after being folded down to reveal an incredibly stylish seating option. We were floored when we came across this fabulous find on Tiny House Design, a great blog about redefining the space (and how much of it) that we live in. Perfect for urban dwellers, artists studios and design lovers alike!

Cozy up to Halloween

After all the pumpkins have been carved, and the candy has been given out - what to do on a rainy (or snowy this year!) Halloween weekend? Scary movies, of course!

In the age of Netflix, Redbox and general instant gratification we don't have to run to the movie store to get whatever is left - like it or not, we have the pick of the litter at our fingertips. So it's lucky that we came across an invaluable and timely list on one of our favorite blogs - the Daily Beast.

Always pushing the envelope, the folks at the Beast asked the one and only Martin Scorsese to list his 10 (he chose 11) top favorite scariest movies of all time. Find the list, that includes some true surprises, by clicking here.

Cuddle up and enjoy a poison apple! Happy Haunting!

A Match Made in (font) Heaven

For all you romantic hearted font lovers out there... This good news just in and hot off the press!

Mrs. Eaves - a most dependable, classy and always right font has finally met her match- the dashing Mr. Eaves.
The font was recently released by Emigre Fonts and is now available in two distinguished, handsome options: Sans and Modern.

Here's what the company has to say about the new development:

"Mr Eaves is the often requested and finally finished sans-serif companion to Mrs Eaves, one of Emigre's classic typeface designs. Created by Zuzana Licko, this latest addition to the Emigre Type Library expands the versatility of the original Mrs Eaves with two complimentary families: Mr Eaves Sans and Mr Eaves Modern.

Mr Eaves was based on the proportions of Mrs Eaves, but Licko took some liberty with its design. One of the main concerns was to avoid creating a typeface that looked like it simply had its serifs cut off. And while it matches Mrs Eaves in weight, color, and armature, Mr Eaves stands as its own typeface with many unique characteristics."

Don't you think the clean, sans serif face is a perfect font pairing with the Mrs.? A precise amount of contrast and a welcome "always the right font" update to add to your font wardrobe.

Purchase the new collection here - and at just $39- think of it as a wedding gift! ;)

Mid-Week Inspiration

Inspired by the well known and loved ww2 propaganda poster 'Keep Calm & Carry On', we got SO excited when we came across this print. Take note of the 'crown' - in this case, made of cogs and wrenches. Love! You can find the prints by Matt Jones here, but hurry, they are going fast.

Arboretum Close Up

No doubt, there are few places as beautiful as an arboretum on a crisp Fall day. The sweeping vistas and swashes of color by species are not to be missed. But what's so easily missed while admiring Mother Nature's spectacle are the tiny details- many of which go unnoticed. So I spent the the last Sunday of October up close and personal- admiring the acalycina, acer circinatum, & pinus parviflora (that's sweetgum, maple & white pine to us) and their special hidden treasures...

Hungry for Change

Consider this; Americans waste more than 40 percent of the food we produce for consumption. That comes at an annual cost of more than $100 billion. At the same time, food prices and the number of Americans without enough to eat continues to rise.

In a constant quest to not only grow our own food, we have been trying to use everything bought in the store. It really hurts to throw perfectly good food away. Meals may not always turn out gourmet, but pushing yourself to come up with a meal with what's already in the fridge or cupboard feels just as good.

Researching the topic, we came across a great blog simply called, Wasted Food. Fusing journalistic research on the topic with the work of countless others, this site examines how we squander so much food. Part blog, part call to action, Wasted Food aims to shed light on the problem of, you guessed it, wasted food.

Be sure to check out the blog as well as all the tabs on the top of the site with information on how communities are coming together to help solve this massive problem.
